This is More than a Watercooler...
The Strategy Exchange exists because change is hard, and being able to share the experience with others is one of the most effective ways to successfully make your way through a transition. That is true for individuals and companies of all sizes.
We need one another to most effectively change, improve, and evolve. This community is a welcoming, open place where you can ask questions, tell stories, and be yourself.
Our goal is to facilitate an uplifting experience that helps folks maintain motivation throughout their journey.
My Community Story - A Potentially "Punishing" Promotion
My first consulting job was a whirlwind. I was only a couple of years out of college, and I had no formal experience. The client was a well-known telecom giant, and the owner/CEO of the consulting company offered to take me to a client meeting to help me better understand how consulting worked from all sides.
We had one agreement - I would observe (only). Wide-eyed and curious, I took notes during the meeting and tried to keep up with who all of the stakeholders were on the client team.
The project was about updating documentation on maintenance of telecom equipment - you know, the big boxes you see along the road - fixing that equipment.
I was fascinated by how much input my company's leadership team had in the discussion.
At the end of the meeting, the client leader asked me if I had any questions. Though I was supposed to observe, I felt compelled to ask a question to show that I was paying attention. I carefully asked one question: "If our end users are out in trucks all day, do they have laptops?"
That might not seem like much of a question today, but this was a relatively big question then. I silenced the room with that question. I sat in the car for 90 minutes of silence all the way back to the office.
Uncomfortable.
The following week, I was named Project Manager of that initiative, and the scope of work changed to include delivery on those laptops I had asked about. I was unprepared and untrained, but my comment resonated with the client team.
Luckily, that small company was full of smart, talented people who were willing to take me under their wing and serve as my community while I came up-to-speed. Without them, I may have failed my company and my client in a task that I was not yet ready for. Instead, they all saw my potential and supported me living up to it.
That is the goal of The Strategy Exchange:
Find your way, and shine. Thrive.
